We all know that repairing things is really cool, but where does one start? With teamed up with Snowdonia Gear Repair to bring you a series of quick repairs you can do yourself. Keep reading for a step by step guide to cleaning a zip.

When to clean your zip:

  • Your zipper is not running smoothly but there is no visible damage. It might feel like it’s dragging or getting sticky at points, even though it’s not trapping any fabric.
  • Your zipper has encountered mud, sand, or dust in its life.
  • Anytime! This is great regular maintenance (especially for bike bags…)

You Will Need:

  • Spare toothbrush
  • Zipper wax

Step 1:

With the zipper unzipped, take the toothbrush to the teeth on one side then the other. Your goal is to brush any grains of sand, dust, and dirt out from between and around the teeth, so make sure that you are getting thorough coverage with the bristles.

Step 2:

Run zip wax along teeth. Zip back up and run wax along the front and back of the zip.

Step 3:

Zip and unzip your item several times, working the wax through the slider and around the zipper. Buff any excess wax with the toothbrush.

Step 4:

Pat yourself of the back. You’ve just cleaned your zip!
